Adjacent to Shipwrecked sits the Heights Hotel, a small boutique hotel owned and operated by those of the restaurant. Guests have full access to the Shipwrecked restaurant and offer discounts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The two buildings have been operated in tandem for decades. Under new management, the hotel went under some renovations and a fresh new design profile.
It wasn’t originally called Heights Hotel nor did it have an existing logo, so I had full creative freedom while designing. At first I experimented with a wide variety of typefaces. A script font would give an elegant, antique feel to the hotel, a nod to the old-fashion Cape Cod style of the building, perhaps. A serif font would maybe give a more high end feel.
The thing that I always kept in mind about this hotel was this deep rooted history and symbiotic relationship to the restaurant next door. I had just designed a logo for this restaurant that was nautical, but youthful and fresh. The hotel was to be the same. I went with a thinner, sans serif font for the text logo. For the icon, I laid two “H”s overlapping each other on the inner ascender, overlaying a rectangle of the same dimensions. I then inverted the colors so that the negative space of the “H”s came forward.
I designed signs, lawn chairs, beach umbrellas, staff t-shirts, mugs, etc. for the hotel; as well as different pamphlets and newspaper ads, here and there. I was really happy with the outcome and how well it paired with the Shipwrecked Logo. They were different enough that they had their own identity, but the thick lines of each logo, I think, tie them together very well.
