A young local entrepreneur, Matty Galvin, approached me in the spring of 2021 looking for help with a courageous new endeavor. At the age of 24, he set off to make his dream of opening an ice cream shop a reality. He had recently spent some time in Costa Rica, where he admired the tropical climate and diverse animal life. Specifically, he loved the sloths, and even more so when he learned that the locals called the funny looking creatures "osos perezosos", translated to "lazy bear" in English. When he returned home to make his ice cream dreams a reality, he knew that he wanted to name it after the animal that was symbolic of such an impactful time in his life.
At our initial design meeting, Matty let me know that he wanted to call the shop "Lazy Bear Creamery" and that the logo must include a sloth, and the design must include a jungle theme.
I spent a lot of time researching sloths, studying how they spend most of their days hanging from a branch for a several hours long snooze. After a few iterations, we settled on a sloth hanging from an ice cream cone with a satisfied smile, apparently having had a first lick of ice cream deliciousness.
For colors, we went with the obvious leafy green, but toned it down so it doubled as a cool mint chocolate chip. We then included various earth tones as accents to complement the jungle woods theme
The image of the sloth was designed after many references of sloths hanging from trees. I was looking for a way to integrate an ice cream cone. I did many iterations of the sloth hanging around and holding an ice cream, they all felt too busy. Instead, I came up with the idea of the sloth hanging from the ice cream cone as if it were a branch itself. Fonts included a whimsical script font to highlight the silliness of a sloth hanging from an ice cream cone and a san serif font who's short stature and jagged edge gave a modern yet subtle jungle feel.
