In the summer of 2020, I found my self furloughed from work due to the global COVID-19 crisis. I missed designing apparel and began to just play around with some ideas on Adobe Illustrator. I showed what I was working on to my little brother who said "that needs to be on a t-shirt" and thus, Second Sunday was born.
We named the brand Second Sunday after a summer tradition in our neighborhood, coined by our dad. It happened once a summer, dad would take off two weeks vacation and he always said the second Sunday of that vacation was the best day. He's have a week to wind down and a week to look forward to. He celebrated that day by doing what he loved most, being on the water. Before we knew it, the other parents in the neighborhood started doing the same, saving up their vacation days throughout the year to celebrate what they loved most, together. They would be on the water all day and into the night, often ending with a dance party under the moon. It was perfect.
We started out with one design that sold out immediately. And then we ordered another batch to be made, sold out immediately. Initially just online, we knew we needed to get the word out, and soon we were doing pop up tents at local craft fairs. We added more designs for t-shirts, added hoodies, hats and stickers to our inventory. We had an excellent holiday season and our merchandise ended up under many different Christmas trees.
We continued selling through the year and into our second summer where we focused a lot on social media marketing and getting high quality images of our gear in three different photoshoots. The summer of 2021 had was another great season for Second Sunday.
Over time, my brother went to college and I moved to Boston to take on a full time job, our availability for this business that we'd grown with so much passion took a back seat for the time being. We kept our site open and did a pop up shop here and there, but eventually closed shop in the fall of 2022 with hopes that we'll see it again some day.
Second Sunday became one of the best experiences I could have ever asked for. It taught me so much about business management, marketing, design, and most importantly, about myself. I realized that there wasn't a single aspect of what I did with Second Sunday that made me light up inside. Everything down to checking inventory, to packing orders, spending countless hours under a tent in all sorts of weather. I loved it all. It helped me discover my dream.
